This is Augusta’s fourth “Directed to Students” (DTS) video on writing an opinion essay. Her DTS videos are designed for teachers to embed in their online classes with their students. In this video, Augusta begins by emphasizing the importance of students having plenty of words to use when writing on a topic. She asks students to brainstorm facts about the animal that they chose to write about–what they eat, where they live, their family, their body covering, their animal group etc. She shows them ABC taxonomies: General Animal Words and Dinosaur Words. She reviews the Animal Groups Essential Summary chart and she encourages them to use the internet to find information about their animal.
This is preparation for the next step in writing their 5 paragraph essay– the use of a Circle Map to put the information about their animal and then the choice of three reasons why they find their animal interesting.
